Lot 130

Segrave, Sir Henry.  A stout brown leather case with a hinging lid and nickel-plated Keene of Birmingham clips and locks, and a brass plate inscribed, 'Sir Henry Segrave - Brooklands - Steward' fitted below the carrying handle. This well-made case has a cotton lining with a pocket in the lid, and storm-edging on three sides. In sound order but beginning to show its age, 15 x 9 x 6-inches (38 x 23 x 15-cms). Historic Note: Henry Segrave was appointed a Brooklands Steward in 1929, presumably after he had been knighted in May 1929, and although the history of this case is unknown, it is likely that the case was part of the regalia supplied by the Brooklands management at the time. Stewards were senior officials in charge of the race meeting, monitoring driving standards and adherence to the rules. Many well-known Brooklands drivers served as Stewards towards the end of their racing careers or after they retired from racing, including Sir Malcolm Campbell, Hon. Brian Lewis, Kenelm Lee Guinness and Charles Jarrott. Their experience as the most successful drivers of the day would have been invaluable in understanding racing incidents and would mean they had the respect of the drivers.
