Barry Appleby (1909-1996) The Weekend Gambols. A horizontal format black pen-and-ink cartoon for the Sunday Express in 1979. The four panels depict George Gambol attempting to resolve a maintenance problem with his car. By the end panel he is covered in oil, surrounded by car parts and, completely bewildered by the instruction manual, has burst spectacularly into tears. Signed in the top left-hand corner of the first panel: Dobs and Barry Appleby (his wife Dobs helped by providing scripts for the cartoons). Above the four panels is written: THE WEEK-END GAMBOLS . . . . by Barry Appleby. The lower margin has annotations by the artist for the printer. A signed letter on headed paper from Barry Appleby dated 28th August 1979 to the original purchaser of the cartoon, with the recipient's details excised, is attached to the back of the frame. Sheet size 24 x 47cm. Framed and glazed. Good condition.
