JOSEPH CHARLES BARROW (d.1802) MOONLIT LANDSCAPE WITH FIGURES BY A FIRE, JAMAICA Signed and dated 1789, watercolour with pen and ink, original washline borders, unframed Image 28.5 x 39cm; sheet 35.5 x 46.5cm. * Barrow is thought not to have travelled to the West Indies but he was retained (like Edward Dayes, Thomas Girtin and Thomas Hearne) to develop studies made by other artists who had travelled abroad. James Moore was one of Barrow's patrons who employed him for this purpose. Barrow was elected FSA in 1790, and he taught John Varley in his active studio, with whom he went on sketching tours in Britain. Sadly, Barrow incurred debts and died penniless. His drawings are rare but examples may be found in the Victoria & Albert and British Museums. Another view in Jamaica by Barrow, also dated 1789, was sold at Christies London on May 8th 2003, lot 229
