A PAIR OF LATE 17TH CENTURY OAK HIGHBACKED CHAIRS, with tall carved backs with central panels containing pairs of turned uprights flanked by scrolling foliate carving and turned uprights, with tapering panelled seats with holes pierced to the corners to retain cushions on scrolling legs with decorative front stretcher and turned rails. 129cm high. A near identical example of this unusual design with turned uprights to the centre can be seen illustrated in Ralph Edwards Dictionary of English Furniture p245, Fig55 where he dates the chair to c1690.
