Lot 1582
FREDERICK WILLIAM NEWTON WHITEHEAD (1853-1938)
AUTUMN DAY ON A DORSET HEATH
Signed, oil on canvas
120 x 181.5cm.
Provenance: From a family collection in Dorset, close to the areas on the Isle of Purbeck where Whitehead used to paint, and almost certainly acquired from the artist. Whitehead travelled around Dorset in a traditional caravan, often completing his pictures en plein air, and camping on fields owned by local landowners to whom he would sometimes give smaller pictures in lieu of rent. This is apparently one of his largest known works.
