A SHOOTING PARTY AT MULGRAVE CASTLE
Oil on canvas
80 x 104.5cm.
* Mulgrave Castle, at Lythe, near Whitby, Yorkshire is the third such building to bear the name and stands on the site of the second castle which was destroyed during the Civil War in 1647. It was ordered in 1718 by Lady Catherine Darnley (d.1743), then Duchess of Buckingham and the illegitimate daughter of King James II and of his mistress Catherine Sedley, Countess of Dorchester. Mulgrave passed by marriage into the Phipps family in 1718 and, its brief lease to Duleep Singh in 1858 notwithstanding, is now held by the 5th Marquess of Normanby.
