Miller came from Staindrop and it is believed that he married Isabella Lamb in Staindrop Church on 20th January 1790. They had two sons. One, William Rickarby Miller, moved to America and his father later followed him to settle in Cleveland, Ohio.
Raby Castle, near Staindrop in County Durham, was built in the 14th Century by John Neville, 3rd Baron Neville de Raby and a licence to crenellate was given in 1378. It has been owned by the Barons Barnard (subsequently created Earls of Darlington and Dukes of Cleveland) since 1626. The 200-acre deer park is a particular attraction.
These pictures show the Castle from the North East and the South East. The latter shows a round tower at a lower level, built by the distinguished architect John Carr (1723-1807) during a remodelling scheme that lasted from 1768-1788. This tower no longer exists and an Octagon Drawing Room was later created on the site.
We are most grateful to Clare Owen, Curator at Raby Castle, for her assistance with the cataloguing of this lot.
