AN 18TH CENTURY EBONISED BRACKET CLOCK,
the 5" dial with silvered chapter ring and gilded spandrels and strike/silent dial above, signed 'William Hughes, Holborn, London' on a tablet above a date aperture, and beneath a pendulum window and twin winding holes. With an eight day two train fusee movement with a short bob pendulum and crown escapement, chiming on a nest of six graduated bells and striking on a larger single bell, with a pull repeat, the back plate elaborately engraved with a basket of flowers amongst foliage and signed 'William Hughes, Holborn, London. The case with raised sarcophagus top with brass handle and pineapple finials, the arch topped door with further gilt spandrels flanked by pierced brasswork corners above a wavy brass apron on bracket feet, with pendulum and case key (lacking winding key), height excluding handle 35cm, width 24cm, depth 19cm.
*William Hughes was a native of Anglesey, he was in London by 1755 working at 119 High Holborn until 1792. He was elected an Honorary Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1781.
