in the form of a large goblet with an applied moulded girdle, a dome circular foot and a knopped stem, inscribed "Ecclesia Sancta Maria Balivi Austrat Dunelmi Ex dono Cuthberti Bowes Jan 1702", by Eli Bilton, Newcastle 1702*; 9" (22.9 cms) high; 10.95 oz
*Although a Newcastle "town mark" was in use during the latter half of the 17th century, it was only in 1702 that the Assay Office was established and this piece is stamped with the very first official date lettter "A" (with a mullet)
