Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter.
The sitter was born in England in May 1799 and married Charlotte Mary Cornish (1800-1883), the daughter of his mother's younger brother, in January 1830. He died in May 1837 in Calcutta as an employee of The East India Company, two days before his 38th birthday. His wife bore him three children, Louisa Sara, Arthur Frederick and Clara Maria.
