Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter until 2016
* The Duke of Cleveland's 1st wife, Lady Catherine Powlett, bore him eight children but died in 1807 aged 41. The Duke then married Elizabeth Russell, daughter of Robert Russell of Newton in Yorkshire, in July 1813 but there was no issue from this union. An undoubted portrait of the Duchess from the circle of John Hoppner is at Raby Castle, Co. Durham.
