A GROUP OF SIX VICTORIAN AND LATER MEDALS TO VICE ADMIRAL A. R. PALMER. A group of six comprising an Order of the British Empire on 2nd Type Military ribbon, China War Medal 1900 named to Lieut A.R. Palmer R.N. H.M.S. Endymion, (Rank and name possibly corrected), 1914-15 Star to Commander A.R. Palmer R.N., War and Victory Medals with Mentioned in Despatches Oak Leaf named to Captain A.R. Palmer R.N. and Defence Medal, unnamed as issued. Mounted as worn with accompanying miniatures. Sold with a photograph of the recipient, indistinctly inscribed, A silver 'Kent County F.C. Rugby Union Challenge Cup 1902' silver award. A sporting award 'H.M.S. Britannia First Prize, Gymnastics Alexander R. Palmer, July 1894', a silver Golf award 'Hayling Golf Club, Service Competition 1920 and a silver salver presented to his father 'J.Mansergh Palmer D.L. by R.J.Harrison Esq D.L. Harrybrook as a token of affection and esteem in remembrance of his friendship during many years, Sept. 1917', Sheffield 1910, 32cm wide. Alexander Robinson Palmer was born on the 23rd May 1879, he had a long and distinguished Naval career, joining at the age of 14 in 1893, he achieved the rank of Lieutenant on 15th January 1900, Commander on 31st December 1911 and Captain from 31st December 1917. During the First World War he was appointed Captain of the second class protected cruiser Juno on the 21st May 1916. Following the War he was appointed to the rank of Rear-Admiral on the 25th March 1929 and placed on the retired list the following day. He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on the 11th of February 1934. He offered his services from 1937 but his role seems to have been limited. He died in 1958.
