A 19thC CONNAUGHT RANGERS RAMS HORN SNUFF MULL. A rams horn Snuff Mull decorated with emblems of England , Scotland and Ireland in Rose - Thistle- Connaught Rangers badge forms. Rams head and cloven foot front mount, snuff rake and spoon attached by chains. No visible hallmarks evident, cap inset with damaged oval polished agate stone. Hardly legible early inscription reads 'from ....K Campbell...to 2 Batt. A plate on the horns curve reads, ' From officers of the 2nd Batt 88th Reg to Officers of the 1st Battalion. Height 6.1/4" and length of 10.1/4" With an original book 'The History of The Mess Plate of the Connaught Rangers' by Captain H F N Jourdain MDCCCC1V (1904). This includes a description of, A Snuff -Horn. After a full page of description and notations, it states: This horn was presented in the first instance by Paymaster Campbell to the 2nd Battalion 88th Regt, and was then presented to the 1st Battalion 88th Regiment when the 2nd battalion was disbanded at Clare Castle in 1816 etc. See Illustration
