A PISANELLO MEDALLION.
An 8.4cm diameter medallion bearing the date 1447, by the artist Pisanello. The scene entitled Innocence and the Unicorn, is depicted on this one sided bronze medallion. Celebrating the 'Virtuous Virgin' Cecilia Gonzaga who rejecting at 19 a marriage, entered a Monastery (1445) where she died aged 25 years old, six years later. (1426-51). Virtue herself taming a Unicorn, which has the hairy body of a goat, symbolizing great knowledge.
