STUDIO OF DOMENICO ROBUSTI, called DOMENICO TINTORETTO (1560-1635)
PORTRAIT OF THE DOGE GIOVANNI BEMBO (1543-1618)
Long half length, wearing Doge's robes, inscribed IOANNES BEMBO/ VENETIAR. DUX/ MDCXVI, oil on canvas
117.5 x 90.5cm.
* Bembo was the 92nd Doge of Venice but held the post for just three years before his death in 1618 at the age of 75. Bembo had been an admiral prior to his elevation to Doge and had suppressed Croatian pirates whose acts had been ruinous to Adriatic trade for many decades. This subject exists in autograph versions ascribed to Tintoretto, including an example at Sothebys New York, June 6th 2013, lot 50 (for which an attribution to Jacopo Palma il Giovane ([c.1548-1628] had been previously suggested)
