* Portner was born in Berlin in 1920, to a Russian mother and a Polish Jewish father. He studied under Max Klaus in Berlin, under Hans Thiemann in Leipzig and also in Paris and Amsterdam before fleeing to England in 1939 to serve in the British army throughout the war. Portner exhibited widely in London in the 1960's and at galleries in South Africa and America.
