GEORGE CHINNERY (1774-1852) PORTRAIT OF THE HON. JOHN EDMUND ELLIOT ((1788-1862) With inscription upper right The Honble John Edmund Elliot / 1788-1862, oil on canvas 74.5 x 62cm. * The sitter was the third son of the 1st Earl of Minto, Governor General of India from 1807-1813. Elliot would have encountered Chinnery in Madras upon arriving as a Writer in 1805. Elliot's own sketchbook from 1812-1815 includes works by Chinnery within (British Library). The sitter married Amelia (nee Casamajor) in 1809 and, upon returning to Britain, was MP for Roxburgshsire and served under Lord John Russell from 1849-1852. Both his brother and his cousin also worked in China. Provenance: with Martyn Gregory, London, From China to the West, 2012-2013, no.17
