CHARLES EDWARD DIXON (1872-1934)
OFF NEW BRIGHTON
Signed, dated 99 and titled, watercolour
37 x 55.5cm.
* The distinctive outline of the New Brighton Tower and Ballroom can be seen on the left. Built in the late 1890's and opened in about the year that this watercolour was drawn, it was briefly the tallest building in Britain (173m) but was not adequately maintained during the War and was gradually dismantled for scrap after just twenty years. The ballroom at its base continued until 1969 and hosted Beatles' shows no fewer than 27 times. It is now entirely demolished.
