Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) was one of the leading military and political figures of the 19th century. He rose to prominence as a general during the Peninsular Campaign of the Napoleonic Wars and became one of our great military heroes when he defeated Napoleon at The Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He served as ambassador to France following Napoleon's exile and was granted a Dukedom. After his military career he was Prime Minister twice as part of the Tory party.
