Among Grimaldi's wealthy clientele was a brewer, John Brenchley, whose partner was Flint Stacey, Mayor of Maidstone. In 1793 they, with others, founded the Kentish Bank. Flint Stacey was father of Edwin, the sitter in this portrait and purchaser of the previous portrait of the Duke of Wellington.
