* The setting for this painting is in near Kirby Cane, Norfolk, along the river Waveney. The artist's summer home was in this area and both the river and the Norfolk countryside appear regularly in his paintings. Picnics were enjoyed by the Blair Leighton family and the artist did paintings of this subject multiple times, once c.1902, again in 1910, and in this later 1920 picture.
