LOCAL INTEREST:- A set of four George III vegetable dish bases of shaped circular outline, with later-fluting around the sides (to resemble strawberry dishes), each engraved in the centre with a coat of arms*, also numbered (1,2,3, & 4) and engraved underneath with scratchweight, unmarked; 9.5" (24 cms) diameter; 69.9 oz (4) *The Arms are those of Poulett impaling Pocock for John, 4th Earl of Poulett, who was born in 1756 and styled Viscount Hinton between 1764 and 1788, after which he succeeded to the Earldom on the death of his father in April 1788. He was Lord Lieutenant of Somerset 1792-1819 and made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Thistle in 1794. He was Lord of the King's Bedchamber from 1795-1819 as well as being Recorder of Bridgewater. He married Sophia, daughter of Admiral Sir Charles Pocock, KB. on 22nd July 1782 at her father's house in Charles Street, London. Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire said of Countess Poulett in a letter composed a few months after her marriage: " Lady Hinton is the oldest little woman I ever saw, very young and so childish and vulgar, one is amazed every now and then to hear her come out with very clever things - she was a great fortune (ie. she brought a great fortune to the marriage) - she has a comical ugly face and her waist is longer than her legs ".
