AESTHETIC MOVEMENT EBONISED AND GILT SECRETAIRE BOOKCASE,
attributed to a design by H.W. Bately, stamped Gillow & Co 788 to the top of a drawer, an arcaded gallery above three open shelves above a painted panel of romantic figures on a gilt ground and a pair of drawers flanked by a cupboard with an arched panel of painted flowers on a gilt ground above a rectangular panel painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style with a lady before foliage above a four section rack, the tooled leather bureau top enclosing a fitted interior with tooled leather writing surfaces and brass locks by Comyn Ching & Co, a two door cupboard below, height 240cm, width 100cm, depth 53cm

Bately was a pupil of B.J. Talbert and published his furniture and designs in his Series of Studies for Domestic Furniture Decoration which includes the designs for a very similar secretaire bookcase.
