Lot 2070
19TH CENTURY HATCHMENT, Crest of a black lion beneath two gold stars and above a single star, beneath a griffin head and flanked by two further griffins, above the motto Confido, 39cm x 39cm
NB: further investigation suggests that, as the arms are unidentifiable, this may not be a hatchment at all but in fact a rarer sample or demonstration piece prepared by a funeral director for promotional purposes. In the nineteenth century, commissioning of hatchments was a part of the undertaker's service, and half a dozen such samples are known to have survived.
