FRIEDRICH GOTTLOB HAYNE (1763-1832)
AN URN OF FLOWERS UPON A LEDGE BESTREWN WITH FUNGI
Signed, indistinctly inscribed and dated (possibly 1821), oil on canvas
155 x 102.5cm.
* Hayne was a distinguished German botanist, taxonomist, pharmacist and professor. He was noted for his meticulous precision in research and he lectured with distinction at the University of Berlin from 1811, rising to Professor of Pharmaceutical Botany in 1828. The three decades of work that he invested in the thirteen volumes of Getreue Darstellung und Beschreibung der in der Arzneykunde gebräuchlichen Gewächse, comprising 624 hand-coloured copper engravings in total, was a remarkably dedicated achievement but the engravings were produced by Friedrich Guimpel and Peter Haas. Hayne seems to be unrecorded as a painter and no comparable works in oil can be traced.
