AN 18thC BAVARIAN HUNTING RIFLE.
A wheel-lock German hunting rifle of considerable quality. Carved fullstocked with classical cheek-plate and sliding compartment containing the winder. An octagonal flared barrel of 33.5/8" length, which has a coarse rifling of some seven grooves. The ornate stock is carved with chequered and swirl patterns with brass and steel furniture. The very ornate wheel-lock action consists of a mystical beast flint striker, with a dog and a deer hunting scene in good detail. With an overall length of some 46.1/2".
The lockplate bears the makers name as Andreas Pehiem or Beheim. Probably around 1740, makers of this name/family were listed as working in the 16th/17th Centuries. Under his name is Wasserburg, which was situated in Bavaria.
