PORTRAIT OF LOUISA ANNE MILES (nee GRYLLS) (1817-1907), WIFE OF WILLIAM MILES (1801-1887)
Bust length, wearing a cream dress with a floral shawl, oil on canvas, mounted oval
59.5 x 48.5cm.;
with a framed painted photograph portrait of the sitter's husband, 30 x 25cm. Miles, of Dixfield House in Exeter, was a magistrate with a professional interest in horse welfare. His widow presented the Queen Street clock tower to the city of Exeter in memory of her husband. Upon her laying of the foundation stone on April 21st 1898, an oak mallet (22cm) was presented to Louisa Miles in recognition of her gift (which had cost her £4000). The mallet is also included in the lot. (3)
