JOHN MARTIN (1789-1854) TWO FIGURES UNDER TREES IN A PARK, A BUILDING IN THE DISTANCE Signed and dated 1821, sepia wash and pencil 12.5 x 19cm. * This is typical of Martin's wash drawings of the period. It is not thought to be a `subject` piece but simply a Romanticized image, some of which were developed into more formal watercolours or engraved for Annuals of the mid-late 1820's. It is possible that Martin added the signature at a slightly later date but it is undoubtedly in his hand.
