A CARVED LAMP H M SUBMARINE HOLLAND
A table lamp with carved mouse decoration, with brass plaque. Carved in Teak from H M S SUBMARINE No1 Holland D. Built 1901. Lost 1913. Raised 1982.
HMS Holland was put to test with Mice aboard, timing their deaths due to submerged conditions. With a crew of eight six Holland Class Submarines were built. The 'Mice' Tests proved being submerged for up to 9 hours, was possible in these boats. They were still being used in the 2nd W War, for similar tests.
After being de-commissioned No 1 Submarine sank whilst being towed to be scrapped, no crew were lost.
Found and brought up she is now on show at the Submarine Museum Gosport.
The INM possesses a historic wooden carving of a mouse, made from wood salvaged from No 1 Submarine.
Measuring some 6.1/2" high by 8.3/4" long in a curved form, with standing mouse decoration.
