The text begins 'Day broke faint and dim into a lonely cell; and struggling with the heavy iron bars that crossed the narrow window sought with chilly compassion, the form of its prostrate inmate, to rouse him from the heavy sleep, which steeps crime in forgetfulness, and sorrow in oblivion.'
