Lot 227
Piglien, Bruno and successors. Twelve photographs recording a painted panorama of Jerusalem and the crucifixion of Christ, mounted on linen, the edges of the canvas and wooden scaffold visible, 240mm x 2760mm approx., c. 1890
Bruno Piglien (1848-1894) pursued a photo-realistic approach to producing a cyclorama of Jerusalem and the crucifixion of Christ. His masterwork was destroyed by fire in 1892, but the idea lived on through a flurry of imitators in Europe, Canada and the USA. The present lot appears to be a document of the work of one of these imitators.
