GAVRILA SERGEYEVICH SERGEYEV (c.1765-1816) GENERAL VIEW OF THE CITY OF JERUSALEM AND ITS ENVIRONS CAPTURED FROM THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE MOUNT OF OLIVES Inscribed with title in Cyrillic in lower margin, watercolour and pencil with gum arabic, unframed Image 49 x 81cm; sheet 53.5 x 83cm. * In 1793-1794, the artist was a member of the Russian Emergency Mission, employed directly by Prince Mikhail Illarionovich Golenishchev-Kutuzov. He visited Turkey and the Middle East, often deriving subject matter from elements found in other artists' works. An apparent companion piece, evidently by the same hand and depicting Jerusalem, is ascribed to Sergeevich Sergev and is in the Nassar D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art, London
