ANDREW GEDDES, ARA (1783-1841) PORTRAIT OF MISS FRANCES COUTTS (d.1809) Seated, long half length, wearing a green dress and a russet coat, oil on canvas 74.5 x 61.5cm. * The sitter was the daughter of James Coutts, co-founder of the eponymous bank, and his wife, Polly (nee Peagrim). Reynolds painted Miss Coutts in 1771 (collection of Coutts Bank). In 1778, she married her cousin John Stuart, later 4th Baronet, of Allanbank (c.1752-1821). Playfair's Baronetage of 1811 praised the late Mrs Stuart for her `pious and exemplary life`.
