Lot 640

The Autocar, Vols. XV to LXXXIII. A run of 70 volumes from Vol. XV, No.506, July 1st 1905 to Vol. LXXXIII, No.2304, December 29th 1939. The majority of these quarto hardbound volumes are in an institutional body's binding, half-bound in light brown cloth and board covers with paper labels to the spines identifying the volume numbers and handwritten notes in black felt pen indicating whether the volume contains the first or second half of the year's issues. Most have a title page and index at the front of the volume, are bound without the magazine covers, and most appear complete. Volumes XV, XVII to XXI, and XXXIV are in worn publisher's bindings, Volumes XXIX to XXXII are in a modern dark green cloth binding, and the issues from Volume LXV August to December 1930 are in three hardbound volumes in black cloth, the issues for July 1930 being absent. The degree of wear to the volumes varies, and prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves with this regard before bidding. The lot also includes a copy of the hardbound octavo Autocar Index to Vols. I to XLI (1895-1918 inclusive) published by The Veteran Car Club of Great Britain in 1974. Just one volume illustrated. “That really is seriously impressive research ... and what is particularly impressive is that you actually bothered to do it ! I strongly suspect that many firms would have simply stuck a lot number on them ... but - yet again - I continue to be impressed ... by everyone at Lawrence’s !”
