19THC BRASS SNUFF BOXES - NORTH CURRY & BIDDENDEN
including a small oval brass snuff box, inscribed James Woodman, N Curry, 1890. Also with a larger heart shaped brass snuff box, inscribed Biddenden, Elisa & Mary Chulkhurst, 1100. (2)
*Elisa and Mary Chulkhurst were supposedly known as the Biddenden Maids. They were said to have been born as conjoined twins in 1100, joined at both the shoulder and hip and lived for 34 years. It is not known whether this was a true story or a folk myth, but the story was very popular in the 19thc when this was probably made as a souvenir.
