A BRACE OF MOARI TAI-AHA STAFFS.
Two hardwood carved Tai-Aha 'quarterstaffs', of the late 19thC with carved Upuko or pommels. Faces with Arero's or tongues protruding from the Upoko, one of 77.1/2" length the other of 75.3/4" overall length.
Of a longer length than normal, the traditional weapon of the New Zealand Maori. Used still in the Powhiri Welcoming Ceremony. A warrior who had studied for several years the Martial art of Mau Rukua, would demonstrate its usage at close quarters.
Made of wood or whale bone, the Tinaua was used for striking or parrying. The Arero was used for stabbing, a formidable weapon prior to the arrival of metal.
