A 19thC GERMAN SCHLAGER DUELLING SWORD.
A rare German Universities duelling sword or Schlager, complete with its inner guard and scabbard. The blade of partial blue and gilt decoration with square tip, 34" in length. The inner steel shell of the guard, is lined with much of the original red beize. Having a shaped grip with rayskin wrapping, the short forefinger strap is present. The scabbard of steel has two hanging loops, with the outer face of the guard covered in red and black leather. There is no makers mark evident, the straight tapering blade of diamond pattern with a chrome finish after the blue & gilt finishes.
It was a part of each students life to fight duels with other students of equal experience. Outlawed finally by the Nazi Party, more to keep the rich in place than to save any possible injuries.
