A THREE BAR INDIAN MUTINY MEDAL TO AN ASS-SURGEON 9th LANCERS. A three bar Indian Mutiny Medal named to Asst Surgn J J Clifford MD 9th Lancers. The bars are Delhi, Relief of Lucknow and Lucknow, the naming is in the impressed official style. The 9th Lancers are recorded as being the only British Regiment awarded the three bars, four being the maximum achievable with the medal. At Delhi some 533 officers and men were awarded the bar, in the 9th Lancers. For the bar Relief of Lucknow some 330 bars were awarded to the 9th Lancers. For the bar Lucknow some 462 bars were awarded, with 73 being awarded as single bar and medal combinations. Surgeon Clifford was a native of Ireland, one of a long line of family Surgeons including some serving in the Royal Navy. Born in Sligo, Ireland on the 8th of September 1821, into a family of Surgeons in both the Army and the Royal Navy. Awarded his MD in Edinburgh 1843. S-Surg 7th August 1843 A-Surg 96th Foot 2nd Battalion the Manchester Regt. 8th August 1846. S-Surgeon 9th Dragoons 27th January 1854. Asst Surgeon 9th Dragoons 26th August 1857. Surgeon Major 9th Dragoons 7th August 1866. Retired on half-pay with the rank of D I C 2nd December 1871. Died at Slough Buckinghamshire 3rd September 1889.
