IRISH HORSE PRIZE MEDALS TO THE GRATTAN-BELLEWS of GALWAY.
Including a large 54mm diameter silver coloured metal award, dated 1892. On a purple ribbon brooch mount and weighing 64 gms, Connaught Grand Provincial Horse Show with Galway 1892 centre. The reverse reads Class 14 won by Punch exhibited by Sir Henry Grattan-Bellew Bart.
Two Irish Pony Show awards in Hallmarked Silver, 47mm diameter and weighing approximately 43 gms each. Each dated 1926 with Inter-Hunt Junior Competition, Miss H Grattan-Bellew on Chilion and Tatters respectively.
Sir Henry Grattan-Bellew was of the famous Bellew family who came to Ireland at the time of the Norman Conquest. For some 900 years the owners of what became Mount Bellew, which was demolished in 1937.
Succeeding his late father he became the 3rd Baron in 1867. High Sherriff (1884) and one-time Captain in the 5th Connaught Rangers. He married Lady Sophia Forbes daughter of the 7th Earl Granard KP. They had eight children, including Helena Grattan-Bellew.
