THE BATTLE ENSIGN OFF A U-BOAT.
A Nazi Battle Ensign off by family provenance, U-97 which was bombed off the coast of Haifa. Forced to the surface by a Lockheed Hudson of 459 Sqdn A A F C. Her Australian pilot forced U-97 be lost along with 27 crew members, leaving 21 survivors.
A senior British Officer serving at Middle East Staff College Haifa, was presented with the Battle Ensign. U-97 was a Type V11C craft, which had completed 13 missions and had sunk 16 ships. Having served in two wolf Packs, her final voyage was on June 3rd 1943 when she was successfully attacked N W of Jaffa.
Measuring some 8' x 5' approx, no visible markings are evident.
