Khaldei was one of the most important Russian photographers and war correspondents. Images such as this show not only his ability to create an interesting composition and impact with the surrendered flags and 'Adolf Hitler' to the foreground but also his presence at some of the most important events of the Second World War. Khaldei reccalled meeting the soldier in the foreground, apparently on the 24th of June the soldiers were each given a flag and Legkoshur was handed Hitler's standard, he recalled not wanting to hold it as it disgusted him but he was told it was a great honour and mark of esteem. See illustration.
