LATE 18TH/EARLY 19THC AMERICAN PRESENTATION DRESS SWORD - IRISH INTEREST a fascinating sword with an Irish Wolfhound pommel, engraved with motto Gentle when stroked/Fierce when provoked, with a wire bound green stained grip. The cross guard engraved Cathedral Members of the Corps 1DV (very feint), To Colonel Smyth, and mounted with a small glass roundel with Harp and Crown motifs (missing glass roundel to reverse). The blade with various engraving (not easy to see) including a figure holding a sword and shield, flowers etc. Blade point missing and blade in poor condition. 89cms long, Blade 71cms long. *A similar sword was sold by Bamfords Auctioneers on the 31st of Oct, 2018, the motto and Wolfhound would signify an origin to an Irish heritage battalion, possibly the 9th Regiment New York State Militia. Though nothing certain can be said about the Cathedral Members of the Corps of 1DV, it is possibly linked to the Cathedral of St Patrick, Manhatten, New York, that was informally founded in 1810, as part of the Archdiocese of New York that was founded in 1784.
