* This type of picture frame, richly carved with scrolls and ornamented with masks and swags of fruit, is known as a Sansovino frame after the distinguished Italian sculptor and architect Jacopo Sansovino (1486-1570). Sansovino's designs, especially in Venice, were particularly influential during the rise of Mannerism and the Baroque style in Italian art.
