LOCAL INTEREST:-
A set of five George III sauce tureens and covers; (one large and four smaller) boat-shaped, on oval pedestal bases with twin, reeded loop handles, each engraved on the cover with a crest and a coronet, and on one side of the body with a coat of arms*, the large one incised underneath with the scratchweight "25-9" and numbered "No.2", the four smaller ones also incised with their scratchweights and numbered "No 1", "No 2","No 3" and "No 4", by J. Wakelin & W. Taylor, London 1789, the large one 9.5" (24.2 cms) long; 101 oz (5)
*The arms are those of Poulett impalinig Pocock for John (Poulett) 4th Earl Poulett (b. at Hinton St. George 3 Apr 1756 and died of apoplexy, 14 Jan 1812 at Hinton St George aged 62). He was styled Viscount Hinton prior to succeeding his father 1788, he was Lord Lieut. of Somerset from 1792 until his death and married Sophia**, daughter of Admiral Sir Charles Pocock K.B. ** on 22 Jul 1782, she died in 1811. The Earl married secondly in 1816.
** The remowned Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire said of her "Lady Hinton is the oddest little woman I ever saw - very young and so childish and vulgar that one is amazed every now and then for her to come out with very clever things. She was of great fortunem very comical ugly face and her waist is longer than her legs (Nov 1782).
