Lot 437
A GEORGE III FOUR-PIECE TEA SET
with oval bodies, engraved border decoration and angular handles; to include a tea pot and stand, a cream jug and sugar bowl, all initialled "GMR", all by John Emes, London 1803/04; the tea pot 5.75" (14.5 cms) long; 35.9 oz (4)
*As is usual with pieces by Emes, Emes and Barnard and the Barnard dynasty in general, the bases of the above pieces have "scratched" numbers, letters & notation which served as a coded record for in-house purposes and could be logged in the firm's day books. The tea pot, however, is also signed underneath with John Eme's initials and signed pieces are seldom encountered at this period.
John Emes was principally an engraver and it doesn't take a great leap of faith to imagine him at work, executing the floral friezes on the vessels.
