Lot 575

A RARE VICTORIAN NOVELTY SCENT BOTTLE & VINAIGRETTE COMBINED in the form of a lighthouse*, with mural engraving & a rockwork base with ladder steps, the top section unscrewing for scent, the base with a flush, hinged cover revealing a vinaigrette, gilt interiors, by Jane Brownett, London 1873; 3.4" (8.5 cms) high; 1.95 oz *This is probably a representation of the Eddystone lighthouse (Smeaton's Tower) which became topical during the 1870's when cracks began to appear when erosion to the rocks under its base, caused the lighthouse to shake whenever large waves hit. Smeaton's tower was rebuilt on Plymouth Hoe, Plymouth & remains a tourist attraction even today. A new tower was built next to the old lighthouse rock and was first lit in 1882.
