THE SPANISH FORGER (Fl. Paris [?], c.1890-1920) THE BETROTHAL OF ST. URSULA Inscribed `br. Laurus famillus Venetus faciebat MDXXXXIIII`, watercolour on vellum within a decorative border 27 x 17.5cm approx. * The forger was exposed by Belle da Costa Greene in 1930, after she identified a picture that had been ascribed to Jorge Ingles (1420-1500) and so assumed that the impostor was Spanish. In fact, The Spanish Forger was thought to have worked in Paris.
