Roling is a versatile artist and lecturer, described in 2005 as an artist who is `the figurehead of contemporary figure painting in the Netherlands.` He studied at The Hague and in Amsterdam in the early 1960's and exhibited his oils in parallel with a lecturing post in Groningen. `Liggend Naakt` dates from the same year as his first major mural at the Nijsinghhuis in Eelde. In 2011, he was made a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion.
