* The second son of John Baxter and Sarah (nee Buck), Nadir was given a Persian forename as a tribute to his father's mercantile interests in Calcutta. The family moved to Berhampur (Brahmapur) shortly after his birth and Nadir returned to England in 1807. He settled in Hampshire and was closely involved with church charities.
