Lot 2108
AFTER GIACOMO ZOFFOLI:
Borghese Gladiator, bronzed resin, height 33cm
Provenance: Commissioned by the late Lady Zetland to complete a set of bronzes to be part of an exhibition in Washington DC titled 'The English Country House' held in 1976. The setting was to be based on a painting by Johan Zoffany of an interior view of Sir Lawrence Dundas's London house which showed six Zoffoli bronzes collected by Sir Lawrence. When the bronzes were reassembled it was discovered that the Gladiator was missing. Lady Zetland borrowed an example held at Woburn to make this facsimile. The original was later recovered and the full set is now back at Aske Hall, the country seat of Sir Lawrence.
